Sep. | 2018. Aeroméxico, Mexico’s legacy airline, hosted its 11th Golf Tournament on September 20th in Punta Mita-Riviera Nayarit. The tournament was headlined by Lorena Ochoa, the first Mexican LPGA golfer to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
The tournament, presented by Santander, welcomed over 120 guests—including the airline’s main business partners—with the goal of raising funds for the “La Barranca Educational Center,” a community facility that offers grade school and middle school education to 360 disadvantaged students in Barranca de Huentitán, Jalisco.
“This event isn’t just a fundraiser: it also helps encourage interest in the sport and promote Mexico’s most idyllic destinations,” said Giancarlo Mulinelli, domestic sales director for Aeroméxico.
Although this is the eleventh tournament, it’s the third year being hosted by the Riviera Nayarit—twice in Punta Mita and once in Nuevo Vallarta—which speaks volumes of Mexico’s Pacific Treasure as a world-class golf destination. Mulinelli reiterated this point when he mentioned the destination was chosen because of its magnificent internationally-renowned golf courses.
In this respect, Jesús Carmona Jiménez, president of the Bahía de Banderas Hotel and Motel Association (AHMBB), highlighted the Riviera Nayarit’s allure as one of the top destinations for lovers of the sport. He also mentioned its PGA (Professional Golfers Association of America) rated courses, designed by some of the best names in the industry—Jack Nicklaus, Robert Von Hagge, Jim Lipe, Percy Clifford and Greg Norman—stating their quality and challenging nature have made them very attractive.
“The Riviera Nayarit extends along 307 km (190 mi) of coastline with an ideal climate year-round; incredible views of the ocean, bays, and valleys; and a backdrop of tropical forests and craggy mountains, not to mention its many and varied landscapes ready to be sculpted in to fairways and greens of exceptional beauty and varying difficulties,” he added.
Mexico’s Pacific Treasure hosted the 11th Aeroméxico Golf Tournament with the participation of Lorena Ochoa, the best Mexican golf player in the world.
The Riviera Nayarit hosted the event’s welcome cocktail party on the magnificent terrace of the Iberostar Playa Mita. The party was attended by Aeroméxico’s directors and executives, among them Managing Director Andrés Cosena who was very pleased with the tournament results, saying they had done their best to pamper their clients and associates with a quality event.
The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort, Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, Iberostar Playa Mita and Grand Palladium Resort hotels sponsored the event, offering accommodations for the invited guests.
The Pacífico Punta Mita course, designed by Jack Nicklaus, set the stage for the 11th Aeroméxico Golf Tournament. Commercial partners and the airline’s guests arrived early on Thursday, September 20th to register and prepare for the day. This is a friendly tournament following the A-Go-Go format in foursomes.
The course is known for its famous “Tail of the Whale” hole and offers players stunning views of Banderas Bay and the Sierra Madre. The golfers all agreed it’s a very friendly course, but that some of the holes were quite challenging.
Special guest Lorena Ochoa held a golf clinic before the start of the tournament and spent some time with the players, who took advantage of the opportunity to ask for playing tips and, of course, take the requisite pictures. Ochoa, the tournament’s guest of honor, was true to her unpretentious nature saying it was an honor to share this space with Mexican golf aficionados.
Aeroméxico offers ample connectivity to Punta Mita-Riviera Maya via its Mexico City-Puerto Vallarta route with 28 weekly flights and very convenient schedules every day of the week.
