Pandemic Update: Mexico’s Top Meetings Destinations Continue to Rally and Reset

The road to reactivation for the meetings industries found in large part in a solid, unrelenting pandemic response, and Mexico’s top meetings destinations continue to reassess and adapt their strategies to ongoing changes.

Hybrid events with in-person attendees are already underway—and the prediction by those in the know is that they will continue to pick up towards the third and fourth quarters of the year.

Below is a quick update on the responsefrom a handful of top MICE destinations to the latest CDC rulings and latest news. (Note: All have received the WTTC “Safe Travels” Stamp.)

Los Cabos

All 85 hotels that are part of the Los Cabos Hotel Association have onsite COVID-19 testing, and many are offering COVID-19 insurance upon check-in. Efforts include a partnership with Intertek Cristal in conjunction with their “A Safer Way to Get” plan, plus a guide to safely managing meetings and events during the pandemic.

New and notable:VIP planners take note of new seasonal flights from Dallas Love Field (DAL) to Los Cabos (SJD) from JSX, a “hop on” private jet service with accessible fares. JetBlue is adding new daily non-stop service from Los Angeles (LAX) and New York (JFK), in addition the list of new direct flights from the east coast added late last year on American Airlines, Delta, and United.


The State of Yucatán recently opened a rapid antigen testing unit in the Merida International Airport that meet CDC requirements to facilitate the transit of passengers bound for the US. Tests are also available in the state’s hotels and labs.

New and Notable: United Airlines recently began weekly direct flights from Houston to Mérida, Volaris inaugurated new flights from Oakland four times a week, and American Airlines is adding a flight from DFW this summer.

Mexican Caribbean

In addition to antigen tests offered in hotels and resorts in Cancun, the Riviera Maya, and Cozumel, officials in the state of Quintana Roo have recently installed rapid testing sites in the Cancun International Airport.

New and notable:New for 2021: Hotel XcaretArte; Grupo Posadas’ Live Aqua Beach Resort Tulkal Riviera Maya and Fiesta Americana Tulkal Riviera Maya; Aloft Tulum; Hilton Cancun, an All-Inclusive Resort; and Planet Hollywood Beach Resort Cancun. New flights include American Airlines and Southwest flights from Houston toCozumel; and new flights to Cozumel and Cancun on Frontier from Denver, Orlando, Miami, and Cincinnati.

Puerto Vallarta/Riviera Nayarit

As of January 29, the Puerto Vallarta International Airport, serving Puerto Vallarta and the Riviera Nayarit, is home to a new onsite lab offering both PCR and antigen tests for travelers. PCR and antigen tests are available (in some cases free) in a majority of large hotels and resorts in both destinations, and many have quarantine areas and plans available for guests who test positive.

New and notable: Air connectivity to PVR international airport includes direct flights from Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, Dallas, Houston, Denver, and Chicago aboard American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Delta, and United. Upcoming openings in Riviera Nayarit include Secrets® Bahia Mita Surf & Spa Resort, Dreams® Bahia Mita Surf & Spa Resort; andSusurros del Corazón by Auberge Resorts Collection.
