From June 9 to 11, the event will take place in Paysandú. It will have the participation of exhibitors from Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Portugal and Israel
After being held last year on European soil, the international congress returns to America, making Uruguay the sixth country to receive it. Previous editions had been held in different locations in Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Honduras and Spain.
The event, which was declared of tourist interest, is aimed at students, teachers, officials and professionals from different countries. It will take place over two days of conferences and workshops, and a final day dedicated to visits and thematic walks.
The Florencio Sánchez Theater will be the main venue, where the sessions will be held with face-to-face and virtual speakers, while the Gobbi Cultural Space will be reserved for the workshop.
“Uruguay has been working for several years to enter the religious tourism circuit at a regional and international level. This congress is a window to the world that we hope we know how to take advantage of”, said Rosario Blanco, one of its organizers.
During the launch of the congress, which took place this Tuesday, May 24, in Sala Arredondo, the specialist emphasized that we Uruguayans broaden our perspective regarding the scope of religious tourism.
“This is non-seasonal tourism, with a medium-high purchasing power, which involves numerous localities. It is a tourism closely linked to heritage. We must remove the exclusive association with Catholicism since it encompasses much more, ”he said.
His appreciation coincides with the wide grid of the event that includes topics as diverse as: the Jesuit contribution, the Jewish experience in Uruguay or religious music, to name a few examples.
Among the themes of the congress there are also presentations linked to the tourism dynamic itself, such as the role of social networks to promote destinations, or a workshop entitled: Travel, services and destinations.
International experience is also contemplated and in this case the case study of Guadalajara de Buga in Colombia or the paper “Fátima. A private public management model”, which comes from Portugal.
The director of Tourism of Paysandú, José Manuel Galván, expressed the honor that it represents for the sanducera city to be the pioneer in having managed to capture this international event, which, as announced, already has 300 registered to date.
The Minister of Tourism, Tabaré Viera, for his part, celebrated the initiative that constitutes a “great window to the world of opportunities”. “Meeting tourism is a fundamental tool for deseasonalization, which this ministry wants to work on together with the city halls,” he affirmed.
Religious tourism moves 300 million people per year, according to figures from the World Tourism Organization and hence the relevance for the country to delve into the subject.
